Pros & Cons of a September Wedding from a Wedding Planner

I love a September wedding. It’s that lovely little crossover between summer and autumn, when you can still get sunshine without necessarily spending the entire day melting in your wedding dress.
But is September actually a good month to get married?
The short answer is yes, it can be gorgeous. But no wedding month is perfect, especially when we’re talking about British weather! Here are five genuine pros and five things to consider before choosing a September wedding date.
Five reasons to love a September wedding
1. Sunshine without quite so much heat
I always tell my couples to pray for sunshine, but don’t necessarily pray for heat!
Sunshine is lovely for your photographs, your drinks reception and the general mood of the day. Extreme heat is a different story when you’re wearing a heavy wedding dress, a three-piece suit or several layers of formal clothing.
September can offer that perfect middle ground. It’s often still bright and pleasantly warm, but usually more comfortable than the hottest part of summer. In the South East, long-term Met Office figures for Heathrow show an average September high of around 19°C.
Warm enough to enjoy being outside, but hopefully not so hot that everyone is slowly melting before the ceremony has even finished.
2. It’s often relatively dry in the South East
Now, I would never promise anybody a dry wedding day in the UK. I don’t have that kind of power!
But September isn’t necessarily the very wet, gloomy month people sometimes imagine. Met Office averages for Heathrow show less rainfall and fewer rainy days in September than in October.
You still need a wet-weather plan, but you’re not automatically signing yourself up for an autumn downpour just because August has ended.
3. The light can be beautiful for photographs
September sunlight is often softer than the strong, overhead light you can get during the height of summer. That softer light can be much more flattering in photographs.
Sunset also arrives earlier, which means you may be able to take those gorgeous golden-hour couple portraits without disappearing from your reception at 9pm.
Speak to your photographer about the expected sunset time and build ten or fifteen minutes into your running order. Trust me, those photographs will be worth it.
4. You can play with summer and autumn styling
This is probably one of my favourite things about September weddings.
You’re not restricted to one particular seasonal look. You can keep things light and summery with whites, soft pinks and delicate florals, or begin introducing richer autumnal shades such as burgundy, rust, chocolate brown and deep green.
You can also mix the two. Imagine soft neutral flowers, warm candlelight and a few deeper accents. Beautiful.
September gives you so much room to create a wedding that feels seasonal without having to cover the venue in pumpkins.
5. Guests are less likely to be away on their summer holidays
July and August are peak holiday months, particularly for families with school-age children. By September, most people are back from their summer trips and settling into their normal routines.
That doesn’t guarantee that everyone will be free, but it may reduce the number of guests who have already booked a holiday abroad.
You also have a little breathing space before the Christmas party season and all the expense that comes with December.
Five things to consider before booking a September wedding
1. September is still a popular wedding month
Please don’t assume September automatically means off-season prices.
September is still part of the main UK wedding season, and popular Saturdays can be booked well in advance. Hitched notes that September remains busy and sought after, although couples may sometimes find better value towards the end of the month.
If you have your heart set on a particular venue or supplier, book early. There may be slightly more flexibility than on a Saturday in August, but September is definitely not a secret bargain month anymore.
2. The weather can still be unpredictable
September can give you blue skies and 22°C. It can also give you wind, rain and a sudden reminder that autumn is on its way.
One year’s lovely September doesn’t guarantee the same conditions the following year. For example, parts of the UK experienced a particularly wet September in 2025, despite also receiving a reasonable amount of sunshine.
If you’re planning an outdoor ceremony or drinks reception, make sure your indoor alternative is something you’d genuinely be happy with. Your Plan B should still feel beautiful, not like the disappointing backup nobody wanted.
3. You have less daylight to work with
The days begin getting noticeably shorter throughout September, particularly towards the end of the month.
This doesn’t mean you can’t have gorgeous outdoor photographs. It just means your timeline needs to be planned properly. If you’re having a later ceremony, you may need to take your couple portraits and group photographs sooner than you expected.
Check the sunset time for your actual wedding date rather than relying on a general summer schedule.
4. The temperature can drop in the evening
A warm September afternoon can turn into a chilly evening surprisingly quickly.
If your guests will be outside after dinner, think about heaters, blankets or an inviting indoor space. This is particularly important for marquees, barns and venues where the evening entertainment takes place outdoors.
You don’t need to plan for the middle of winter. Just don’t let a sunny afternoon trick you into forgetting that it may be much cooler by 9pm.
5. September can be a busy month for families
The summer holidays may be over, but September brings the return to school, new routines and busy work diaries.
Parents and teachers may find it harder to take time away during the week, especially at the beginning of term. If several important guests have school-age children or work in education, a weekday wedding could be more difficult for them.
It doesn’t mean you shouldn’t choose one. It’s simply worth checking with the people you absolutely want there before confirming the date.
So, is September a good month to get married?
Honestly? Yes, I think September can be one of the loveliest months for a wedding.
You can still enjoy sunshine, outdoor photographs and beautiful flowers without necessarily dealing with the intense heat of midsummer. You also have the freedom to choose between a fresh summer look and a richer autumnal style.
Just remember that September is still popular, the evenings are getting shorter and British weather will always do whatever it wants.
Plan for both sunshine and rain, then enjoy whichever version of the day turns up. You’re getting married either way, and that’s the exciting part!
